(κρύπτη), a) eine lange, enge Galerie zu ebener Erde, die von beiden Seiten durch Mauern eingeschlossen war und die das Licht durch Fensterreihen erhielt, die entweder in der einen od. in beiden Seitenwänden angebracht waren, als angenehmer Zufluchtsort bei der Hitze des Tages oder Ungunst des Wetters, etwa der Kreuzgang, Korridor, in den Villen der Vornehmen, gew. als Seitenbau großer Häuser oder der Tempel, Varro sat.
