1 Italian Wool
Italian wool is not of such great production as to influence any comparison with the great wool producing areas. The chief Italian areas are the centres and southern ranges, and the Islands of Sicily and Sardinia. The wools grown are merino, fine crossbred, and part carpet wool, similar to Scottish-grown blackfaced. The merino is not of a high standard, being somewhat " lean " and lacks fulsomeness. The fine crossbred is an excellent hosiery type, and may be substituted at times or blended with English Down wools. Much of the wool is consumed in Italy, but at times a fair quantity reaches England. -
2 Roscommon Wool
The sheep producing this wool are widely distributed in the Irish Lowlands. It has an 8-in. staple, spins 44's quality and the fleeces average 8-lb. Used for dress fabrics, serges and bunting, etc. Classed as a demi-lustre. -

6 Australian Wools
Australia is the world's greatest wool producing country, and supplies nearly 900 million Lb. yearly. Mainly merino. Only a small percentage of the wools are crossbreds. The wools, in the shorn state, are very yolky and only yield about 50 per cent pure wool after scouring. Owing to the vast-ness of the country there is a very wide range in qualities of wool, but all of them are of a high quality. Australian merino wool is classifiable into three chief types, which undergo modification according to the conditions of different localities: Fine, showing about 24 crimps to the inch. Medium, with 18 / 22 crimps and a blunt tip at the end of the fibre. Strong, with 14 / 18 crimps an altogether longer staple, and a knob-like tip. -
7 African Wools
Splendid wools are now being produced in the Cape and Natal. For many years it had been recognised that the climate was very suited to the growth of high-class merino wool and the development of good types is a result of the building up from judicial infusion of better known merino types, and with the support of the South African Government, great progress has been effected. Formerly, much of the Cape merino was shorn twice yearly, and, in fact, shearing was often a matter of degree, according to the circumstance of the grower. Thus, we frequently saw designations as "4 months", "6 months", "8 to 10 months", "10 to 12 months", "12 months", and even "14 months". But of late years this early shearing is diminishing, and thus more valuable combing wools are reaching the world centres. Formerly, much of the Cape merino was unattractive, and low yielding, making it difficult of estimation. Today, we often see magnificent 64/70's warp wools and a yield of 15 per cent to 20 per cent higher than formerly. The bulk of the Cape wools are beautifully fine, soft, and of a very white colour, and the noils from these wools also have a higher value than from most other merino wools. The production has also increased materially within recent years, and the South African contribution is now a valuable one to U.S.A., Great Britain, the Continent and Japan. East African wools are still in their infancy as regards character and amount. But the climate seems to be suitable for crossbred production, and of late years importation of good breeds for crossing and improving the native types lend support to the belief in the future of East Africa as a wool-producing area. -

20 Pashm
PASHM, PASHMINA, PASHIM, PUSH-MINAThe fine, downy hair obtained from several species of goats in Kashmir and other parts of India. The hair of the goat is cut off once a year with a blunt knife, leaving the soft pashm, or undergrowth of hair behind. The pashm is combed out, pulled apart and all coarser fibres are picked out by hand. The finest quality is yielded by a domesticated goat and from this type the finest Kashmir shawls are made, this variety is called Turfani pashm, or phum, or simply pashm. A lower grade is Phiri. Another variety is obtained from a wild goat and this hair is usually coloured (black or grey). The black is known as Shabri, and the grey as Shah-tush, this type, although genuine pashm, is not so; high in quality as the domestic type. Pashmina is the finest fibre among the wools and hairs, and is the wool used for the finest Cashmere shawls and other Kashmir products. ————————PASHMINA SUBSTITUTES, PASHMThe comparatively scarce Ibex, which yields a white or silver-grey hair, Changtain Pashmina (also called Kuhlchack or Ralchack). In the later years of the 19th century a very soft wool was imported from Southern Persia to Kashmir, under the name of Kirmani Pashm, and used in some of the Kashmir products. Other substitutes came from Afghanistan under the name of Kabul Pashm. The Yak is included by some authorities as a pashm producing animal.
