В глубоких водах открытого океана — обрушение ветровых волн, происходящее, когда крутизна их гребней превышает критическое значение, обычно определяемое углом 120°. Обрушение представляет собой турбулентное, с образованием пены разрушение самого гребня волны, отсюда и выражение «белый барашек». Барашки образуются, когда ветер усиливается и плотность энергии волн начинает расти.
