Lancé par la société Apple en avril 2003, l’iTunes Music Store, communément appelé iTunes, est un site de téléchargement légal de musique, vite célébré pour sa simplicité et son ergonomie. L’algorithme de codage audio utilisé est l’AAC (advanced audio coding). Le système de DRM (digital rights management) répond au nom d’AAC/FairPlay. A l’origine, iTunes est créé pour contrer la chute des ventes de CD due au "piratage sur le web", à savoir la circulation illégale de fichiers MP3 par le biais de sites P2P (peer-to-peer) comme Napster (ancienne version, la version actuelle est légale) ou Kazaa. Le succès d’iTunes est fulgurant. 2 millions de titres (0,99 dollar US l’unité) sont vendus en quinze jours. Parallèlement, on observe une montée en flèche des ventes de l’iPod, le baladeur de musique numérique lancé en octobre 2001 par Apple pour devenir d’emblée la référence du marché. Une version Windows d’iTunes est lancée en octobre 2003. Plus de 30 millions de titres sont vendus sur iTunes au cours de l’année 2003. En juin 2004, iTunes débarque en Europe, en commençant par l’Allemagne, la France et le Royaume-Uni. En juillet 2004, aux Etats-Unis, les 100 millions de titres vendus par iTunes représentent 70% du marché de la musique payante en ligne. En octobre 2004, iTunes poursuit sa progression dans d’autres pays. En février 2005, Apple s’allie avec le fabricant Motorola pour permettre le téléchargement de musique sur téléphone portable à partir de la plateforme iTunes. En juillet 2005, iTunes annonce 500 millions de titres vendus depuis ses débuts. En août 2005, iTunes lance sa plateforme japonaise, avec un million de titres vendus les quatre premiers jours. En 2006, iTunes lance un service de téléchargement de jeux et un service de podcasts. En automne 2006, iTune lance un service de vidéos (ou VOD: video on demand).En janvier 2007, iTunes annonce 2 milliards de titres vendus depuis ses débuts, dont 1,2 milliard en 2006.
