По своей природе речевой сигнал является аналоговым и обладает как смысловой, так и сигнальной избыточностью. Даже в слитной речи доля избыточности достаточно высока, а поэтому допускаются частичные потери речевого сигнала при воспроизведении. В отличие от данных цифровая (“пакетизированная”) речь передается в режиме реального времени и появление больших задержек (более 300 мс) недопустимо, поскольку они начинают препятствовать нормальному телефонному разговору.
