1 γόνυ
γόνυ, gen. γούνατος and γουνός, pl. γούνατα and γοῦνα, gen. γούνων, dat. γούνασι and γούνεσσι: knee; γόνυ κάμπτειν, phrase for sitting down to rest, ἐπὶ γούνεσσι καθίσσᾶς, taking upon the ‘lap,’ Il. 9.488, Il. 5.370; freq. as typical of physical strength, εἰσόκε μοι φίλα γούνατ' ὀρώρῃ, so long as my ‘knees can spring,’ so long as my strength shall last; but oftenest of suddenly failing strength, swooning, death, πολλῶν ἀνδρῶν ὑπὸ γούνατ' ἔλῦσεν (Helen caused the death of many men); λύτο γούνατα, Od. 4.703, ‘knees were relaxed,’ of Penelope. From the custom of embracing the knees in supplication come the phrases γοῦνα or γούνων λαβεἶν, ἅψασθαι, ὑπὲρ γούνων or γούνων λίσσεσθαι, ‘by’ the knees, ‘by your life’; hence θεῶν ἐν γούνασι κεῖται, ‘rests with’ the gods, ‘in the gift’ of the gods, Od. 1.267.A Homeric dictionary (Greek-English) (Ελληνικά-Αγγλικά ομηρικό λεξικό) > γόνυ

Ion. γούνατος, ep. also γουνός (\< *γονϜ-ός), pl. γόνατα, γούνατα, ep. also γοῦναDerivatives: γονατώδης `with joints' (Thphr.); denom. γουνάζομαι `clasp the knees' (as suppliant) (Il.) with γούνασμα (Lyc.), γουνασμός (Eust.), also γουνόομαι `id.'; γονατόομαι `get joints' (Thphr.), γονατίζω `bend the knee' (Cratin.).Origin: IE [Indo-European] [380] ǵenu, ǵonu `knee'Etymology: Old word for `knee'. Skt. jā́nu, Av. zānu-drājah-, MPers. zānūk (PIE. *o, long through Brugmann's law); Hitt. genu, Lat. genū, Toch. A kanw-eṃ, B kenīne `(both) knees' (du.), Arm. cun-r, pl. cun-g-k`; note the zero grade in Av. žnu-byas-čit_ (dat. pl.; cf. γνύ-ξ); from *ǵneu- (from the gen. *ǵneu-s), e.g. Goth. kniu (PGm. *kneu̯-a-, PIE. *ǵneu̯-o-. - On Hom. θεῶν ἐν γούνασι κεῖται Schwyzer Άντίδωρον 283ff. - Cf. ἰγνύη. 8 πρόχνυ
Grammatical information: Adv.Meaning: `kneeling, on the knees' (Ι 570 πρόχνυ καθεζομένη), approx. `fully, thoroughly, entirely' (Φ 460, ξ 69 πρόχνυ ( ἀπ-)ολέσθαι; A. R. 1,1118; 2,249), meaning uncertain Antim. Col. 2 P.Origin: IE [Indo-European] [381] *ǵonu `knee'Etymology: In the meaning `kneeling' clearly from γόνυ with zero grade as in γνύξ a.o., so prop. "with the knees in front", frozen acc. n. for *πρό-γνυ = Skt. (gramm.) pra-jñú- meaning not quite certain (Wackernagel Unt. 74) with unclear aspiration, for which several explanations have been attempted (s. Schwyzer 328). The meaning `fully' v. t. must, if at all from `kneeling', come from reinterpretation of an ep. expression. For independent origin Brugmann -Thumb 127n.1, who, not very convincing, derived πρόχνυ `fully' from χναύω `plane, gnaw off'; an orig. *πρό-γνυ `kneeling' would have coalesced with it (accepted by Wackernagel l.c.). -- Details in Meringer WuS 11, 119f., Picard Rev.
