Il più antico è lo University College di Oxford, che risale al 1249 e fu fondato come molti altri college, proprio come collegio, cioè come pensionato per studenti. Oggi i college sono entità indipendenti, ciascuna con una propria biblioteca e una cappella, che scelgono autonomamente i propri studenti e docenti.
