21 Crepe
CREPE (Fancy Crepe, Crape)Originally called crapes, and were always black and used for mourning purposes. It is a puckered or crinkled fabric. Special hard-twisted yarns are used, and when the cloth is washed or finished a crepe effect is produced which is permanent, due to the shrinkage of the special yarns. The cloths produced by what are termed crepe weaves do not pucker except when hard-twisted yarns are used (see Crepon). The following weave particulars are typical of true cotton crepes produced from crepe yarns in a plain weave and when finished the cloths shrink from 48-in. to 34/5-in. One has 48 ends and 42 picks per inch in the loom and gives 60 ends and 52 picks per inch finished. Warp and weft are 2/120's. The other is woven 38 X 46 in the loom and gives 56 X 60 finished, 100's warp and weft crepe yarns, with 2/80's colour. Both fabrics are picked two right and two reverse. -

23 Crepes
These are made in many widths and qualities, and in cotton, wool, rayon, silk and combinations of these, such as cotton warp and rayon weft, rayon warp and silk weft, etc. In crepes dependent solely on the contractile power of highly twisted yarns for producing a wrinkled pebble or figure effect, the hard-twisted warps and wefts are used in various ways, as follows: - In each case R= right twist; L=left or reverse twist. Warp 2 R, 2 L, alternately. Weft all one twist. Warp 2 R, 2 L, alternately. Weft 2 R, 2 L. Warp all one twist. Weft 2 R, 2 L alternately. Warp 1 R, 1 L, alternately. Weft 2 R, 2 L, alternately. Other arrangements of warp and weft are also used. -
24 Open Band
A worsted yarn twisted from left to right, that is, in the same direction as the diagonal of a letter Z. Cross-band yarn is twisted in the opposite way, in the same direction as the diagonal of a letter S (see crossband yarn) lowered in the sley which places the warp threads alternately closer together and wider apart and this produces a curved effect in the cloth. The reed is the invention of a Burnley maker and can be arranged in various patterns. -
25 Shadow Stripes And Checks
A cloth made with stripes by using warp yarns of different twists; one stripe has left-hand and the next right-hand twisted yarn. When dyed a shadowy effect is produced. The left-hand twisted yarn is usually tinted in sizing with a loose colour to enable the operatives to distinguish it from the other twist. " Shadow Fabrics " is the name given to this type of fabric in the woollen trade. They are made in all weights and in checks as well as stripes. Suiting fabrics are very popular in browns, blues, greys and blacks. Fine worsted yarns are general. Checks are also made with right- and reverse-twist yarns in the weft.Dictionary of the English textile terms > Shadow Stripes And Checks

26 Torchonette
Coarse open cotton fabric made 24 ends and 24 picks per inch from a special 3/42's yarn which has a fine hard twisted cotton thread lightly twisted with it. The effect is a crinkled cloth. -
27 Pearly Yarn
This is a high-class two-fold yarn and used for embroidery and as an effect yarn in fabrics. A " pearly " effect is given by the screw-like twist on the two singles. The singles from 70's to 90's combed yarn are twisted from 40 to 50 turns per inch, and doubled with the twist in the reverse way, about 20 turns per inch. -

31 Arabian Crepe
A cotton fabric woven plain from hard-twisted yarns such as 24's warp, 28's weft (crepe yarns) 44 X 32 per inch. A figured effect is woven by the use of a coarse soft spun extra weft which floats from figure to figure, and the floats are afterwards cut away, thus giving a compact figure on a plain ground. Various qualities are made in silk and worsted yarns. -
32 Boucle Yarn
Has a curled or loop effect and largely used to produce the boucle cloth. These yarns are usually three-fold. May be produced by either of two methods. The yarn may be three-fold, and during doubling, one of the strands is delivered faster than the other two, or a two-fold yarn is prepared and one of the strands is fed at a greater speed to produce the loop, then this doubled yarn is twisted with a single fine thread which binds the loops in position. -
33 Charmelaine Cloth
A dress fabric made from Botany wool warp and weft in a three-shaft twill weave (1 X 2), giving a twill repp effect. Two-fold yarns are used and six shafts as a rule. The ends per inch vary from 90 to 130 and picks 40 to 60. Fine warp and thick hard twisted weft. Usually dyed in light shades and finished to 54-in. A sample quality is made 58-m., 120 X 48 per inch, 2/72's / 2/36's, 1 X 2 weave. -
34 Coral Yarn
A yarn principally used for making ladies' and children's mittens. It is a light two-fold thread exceedingly hard twisted to give the coral effect. -
35 Cote Pali
A mixture dress fabric, formerly made in France, of light weight and in fancy coloured designs. They were variously made of linen warp and hard twisted silk weft; silk warp and wool weft; cotton warp and silk weft. All had a ribbed effect. -
36 Crimp Fabrics
The term includes such types as the "blister" and the "crepon." These fabrics are used for the making of dress goods, and can be produced in five different ways, namely: (a) by making suitable combinations of slack and tight weaves; (b) unequal warp tension in weaving, the crimp forming warp threads being allowed to weave very slack; (c) by combining two materials having a marked dissimilarity of shrinkage power during wet finishing, i.e., botany wool and mohair; (d) by modifying the weave structure in such a manner as to drop some picks from the main fabric and allow them to float on the back, the effectiveness of this method is enhanced by using a hard-twisted, single weft yarn to assist the contraction; (e) chemical means, such as is produced by printing the cloth in stripes with caustic soda of about 20 per cent strength, thickened with some substance such as starch. The cloth shrinks where printed and the unprinted parts in puckering gives the crimp effect. By dyeing the cloth two tones are obtained as a darker shade is shown where the caustic soda appears (see crepeing and crimps) -
37 Estrella
A dress fabric in the plain weave, made from a silk warp and fine botany weft. The wefting is 2 picks right-hand twist and 2 picks left-hand twist yarns. The weft is very hard twisted, which produces in the finished cloth a crinkled crepe effect. The cloth is a marocain in style. -
38 Extracted Cloth
A fabric produced by using a cotton thread with a wool thread and after weaving, the cotton is "extracted" or carbonised. The fabric is also known as " Mohlaine," " Permo " and " Resilda." The cloth is a type of lustrous worsted dress fabric in which a very soft twist warp is necessary in order to obtain the peculiar crepe effect desired. The wool warp, owing to the low twist, is too weak for weaving so the yam is twisted with a cotton thread which gives the requisite strength. The woven fabric is passed through a sulphuric acid solution which removes the cotton, leaving the wool yarns intact in the subsequent drying process (see Permo) -
39 Fancy Yarns
See Effect Yarn. ———————— (See Yarns). In addition to fancy coloured yarns there are varieties of specially spun or twisted yarns. See under the following terms: - Bead, Boucle, Bourette, Cable, Chenille, Cloud, Corkscrew, Crape, Curl, Diamond or Chain, Gassed, Genapped, Gimp, Grandrelle, Knickerbocker, Knop, Loop, Marl, Mottle, Permo, Reany, Ruffle Wool, Slub, Snarl, Spiral, Spot, Twist-on-Twist. -
40 Flat Crepe
An all-silk fabric woven from a raw silk warp and a crepe-de-chine hard twisted weft. The finished cloth is flat and has a satin effect to the handle. Plain weave and usually more ends than picks. Many qualities are made from pure silk fabric down to cloths containing as much as 24 per cent of added weight.
