47 American Twill
AMERICAN TWILL, wrongly called "Shalloon".The name given to the ordinary twill weave 2/2 by the American traders. "Shalloon" applied to this twill is not correct, since a shalloon is a very good quality woollen cloth (see Shalloon), whereas American twills are cotton fabrics. The American cloth varies in weight, such as 38-in., 64 X 60, 36/24, 2 X 2 twill. 36-in., 68 X 66, 40/32, 2 X 2 twill. -

The American cloth varies in weight, such as 38-in., 64 X 60, 36/24, 2 X 2 twill. 36-in., 68 X 66, 40/32, 2 X 2 twill. ———————— A light woollen cloth used as linings for coats, liveries, etc., made from hard-twisted yarns in 2 & 2 twill weave, usually 30-in. to 40-in. wide and 36 yards long. The fabrics known as Celtic are made in weaves similar to these and from worsted or woollen yarns. Also the fabrics known as "Celtics " are made with the same weave -
52 Chain Twill
Another name for the Clay Twill. These twills give a chain effect due to the two fold weft and the large amount of shrinkage in width that takes place during finishing. There is about 15 to 17 per cent shrinkage from cloth width to finished width. The yams are botany worsteds and woven about 60 X 62 per inch; 2/38's to 23/4/42's yarns. -
53 Clays
A worsted cloth, diagonal twill weave, similar to a serge cloth but without gloss. The warp and weft yarns are slackly twisted, which gives a dull face to the cloth. The name was derived from a manufacturer (see Chain Twills). The weave is on six-shafts 3/3 and a typical make is 67 ends X 64 picks per inch, 2/30's worsted warp, 14's worsted and cotton mixed weft with about 60 per cent. worsted. The cloth has a firm feel and is very durable. -
54 Clear Finish
This term is generally applied to the finish given to warp-faced woollen fabrics, and means that after finishing, the weave is clearly visible. The fabric is felted to give a compact structure, then raised or brushed and afterwards is cropped to remove loose fibres from the face. Such material as Venetians, Whipcords, Wool Bedford Cords, Botany Twills, etc., are clear finished. -
55 Coatings
A heavy drill cloth, woven in the 3 X 1 weave, and dyed black with a glossy finish. Variety is obtained by introducing the satin weave and cords in length-wise stripes, and small spots. Qualities vary up to 130 ends and 68 picks. A typical make is 29-in. wide, 92/48 per inch, 2/32's T., 20's W. Another make is 48-in. splits, 116/48 per inch, 28's T., 12's W. 56 Cotton Suitings
All-cotton fabrics, made in imitation of the worsted suitings, colours and designs being very closely copied. The colours are mostly greys, browns, etc., with black and white used for effect. Simple weaves are employed, such as plain, twills, matts, ribs and small dobby effects. A two-fold warp is most general with a soft spun weft. The qualities vary from 44 to 84 ends per inch, and 48 up to 72 picks per inch, 2/24's, 2/30's and 2/32's warp, with 10's to 20's weft. Usually dyed yarns are used all through. -
