Ursprüngliche Bedeutung des Ausdrucks, in der er im Roman gebraucht wird: Verstorbene leibeigene Bauern, die amtlich als lebend galten, weil ihre Namen erst bei der nächsten Volkszählung aus den Listen gestrichen werden durften; die Hauptfigur des Romans, Tschitschikow, ist damit beschäftigt, derartige tote Seelen zu spekulativen Zwecken aufzukaufen. Heule tritt der Ausdruck in zwei Bedeutungen auf:1) Menschen, die formal einer Organisation u. ä. angehören, in Wirklichkeit aber ausgeschieden sind;2) Menschen mit einer "toten Seele". -
