Раньше, когда медицина была несовершенна и не имела никаких обезболивающих средств, офицерам во время операции давали морфий или настойку опия, чтобы заглушить боль; сержантов поили ромом или другими спиртными напитками, чтобы привести их в бессознательное состояние, а рядовым клали пулю между зубов, приказывая сжать её зубами. Это позволяло хоть как-то отвлечься от нестерпимой боли при операции.It's no good complaining because you've lost your job.
