Это слово встречалось в различном написании начиная с конца XVI в.; в своём современном виде совпадает с написанием вышедшего из употребления слова, обозначавшего дерево, из которого в старину делали рукоятки ножей и кинжалов. Несмотря на это, связь между этими двумя словами так и не была установлена, поэтому появление современного значения остаётся загадкой. В настоящее время существительное dudgeon употребляется только в сочетании с прилагательными: in high/deep/great dudgeon. I don't know what you've said or done to her, but anyone can see she's in high dudgeon over something or other. — Я не знаю, что ты сделал или сказал ей, но любому ясно, что она почему-то очень обижена. -
