lawyer [ˈlɔ:jər]━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━Il existe deux catégories d'avocats en Grande-Bretagne: les « solicitors » et les « barristers » (appelés « advocates » en Écosse). Les premiers sont à la fois des notaires, qui traitent donc les transactions immobilières, les affaires de succession, etc, et des avocats habilités à plaider au civil dans les instances inférieures. Les seconds sont des avocats plus spécialisés, qui interviennent au pénal ou au civil dans les instances supérieures, y compris pour défendre des affaires dont ils sont saisis par des « solicitors ».Aux États-Unis, les avocats sont appelés « attorneys ». Ils travaillent souvent selon le système dit « no win no fee » (c'est-à-dire que le client ne paie les honoraires que s'il a gain de cause), ce qui leur permet de défendre des clients pauvres dans des affaires importantes, avec la perspective d'être bien rétribués en cas de succès. Ainsi, les dommages et intérêts demandés dans les affaires civiles sont souvent beaucoup plus élevés qu'en Europe, et les Américains ont volontiers recours aux voies judiciaires pour régler leurs différends.* * *['lɔːjə(r)] -
