Учреждена Конгрессом 1 апреля 1954, 11 июля 1955 открылось первоначально на авиабазе Лоури [Lowry Air Force Base] в г. Денвере, в конце 1958 переведено на место постоянной дислокации в 11 км к северу от г. Колорадо-Спрингс, шт. Колорадо. Занимает территорию площадью 7,3 тыс. га, окруженную горами. По окончании четырехлетнего обучения, включающего общеобразовательные предметы и специальную подготовку, выпускники получают диплом бакалавра [ bachelor's degree] и звание второго лейтенанта [ Second Lieutenant]. В Академию может поступить любой не состоявший в браке законопослушный гражданин США в возрасте от 17 до 22 лет на 1 июля в год поступления. Около 85 процентов мест выделяются штатам на основе их представительства в Конгрессе, а также жителям Округа Колумбия [ District of Columbia], Пуэрто-Рико [ Puerto Rico], Американского Самоа [ American Samoa], Виргинских островов [Virgin Islands] и Гуама [ Guam]. Поступившие определяются на основе конкурсных экзаменов и уровня физической подготовки среди кандидатов, предложенных сенаторами и конгрессменами. Остальные кадеты набираются по рекомендации Президента и Вице-президента США, из семей погибших военнослужащих, семей награжденных Медалью почета [ Medal of Honor], а также из резервных программ. Женщины принимаются в Академию начиная с 1976. Ежегодно принимаются около 1,2 тыс. кадетов. Правительство оплачивает расходы на жилье и образование, а также выплачивает стипендии. 62 Harris Tweed
A fabric defined for the purpose of the trade mark of the Harris Tweed Association as " tweed, hand-spun, hand-woven and dyed and finished by hand in the islands of Lewis, Harris, Uist, Barra, and their several purtenances, and all known as the Outer Hebrides." It is a loosely woven cloth from hill and mountain pure virgin wools. During finishing the cloths are dried in loft", heated with peat fires, which gives the peculiar odour noticed in the cloth. About 18 to 22 end and picks per inch and 120 yards per ounce warp and weft (see Harris Yarn). Also called Hebridean Cloth. The Board of Trade further provide that "Wherever the Harris Tweed trade mark is used there shall be added in legible characters the words ' Woven in Harris ' or ' Woven in Lewis ' or ' Woven in Uist ' or ' Woven in Barra,' as the case may be, and for the purpose of distinction there shall also be added the word "hand-spun" in the case of tweeds made entirely from hand-spun yam".
