Клиент, потребитель. В начале XVIII в. это слово означало игрока, понтёра, т. е. особенно того, кто делает ставку против банка. Слово punter произошло от французского слова ponte (игрок), которое, в свою очередь, образовалось от слова ponte (кладки яиц). В конце XIX в. это слово стало означать человека, получающего деньги от аукционера за то, что он делает ставки, чтобы повысить цены на выставленные на продажу вещи. Глагол to punt означает подать ногой мяч (в игре регби). К 1960-м гг. слово punter стало означать любого клиента, потребителя.We shall have to put up prices again.
