Among the Romans this word signified " a cloak," but in the 8th century it was applied to a long band of white linen, about 2-in. to 3-in. wide, which encircled the shoulders, the two ends hanging down before and behind, as low as the bottom of the chasuble. It formed the distinctive ornament of an archbishop. Often the band had gold or silver threads interwoven. The Greeks used a pallium as a cloak which was made from wool in a square form like a blanket. -
