  • 101 novia

(Sp. model spelled same [nóßja] < Vulgar Latin noviam 'newly-wed woman' or 'woman being married')
Bentley: 1929. A sweetheart or girlfriend. Bentley suggests that in Spanish this term is confined to a bride or a girl about to be married. However, the DRAE gives a broader definition, indicating that it may mean someone who engages in romantic relations with the expectation of someday being married. Simon and Schuster's International Dictionary gives 'girlfriend' and 'sweetheart' as two of the meanings of this term. See also dulce.

  • 105 bosal

( bozal [bosál]< bozo < Latin bucceus 'from the mouth,' and -al 'pertaining to')
New Mexico: 1844. A rope; a leather, or rawhide halter; or a metal ring that fits around the nose of a horse and is used as part of a hackamore in place of a bit. It can also refer to the rope used for such a halter. A bosal is often used when breaking a horse or riding an unruly horse. The DRAE gives several definitions for bozal, but notes that in the Americas it refers to a rope that, when tied to the neck of an animal, functions as a halter. In Spain, the more common term is bozo. Santamaría expands on the definition found in the DRAE and indicates that a bozal is made by loosely looping a rope around an animal's neck and securing it with a knot, then tying the rest of the rope around the horse's nose, using the end as a single rein.
        Alternate forms: bonsal, bosaal, bozal.

  • 106 manta

(Sp. model spelled same [manta] < manto 'mantle; cloak' < Late Latin mantum 'short cloak')
Arizona: 1887. A pack cover, generally a large cotton or canvas one (approximately nine feet by twelve feet), laid over the top of a loaded packsaddle to protect the goods from rain or snowstorms. It may also have been wrapped around a load of goods before setting it on the packsaddle. Among the several definitions given by the DRAE for this term is a one describing piece of ordinary cotton fabric used in Mexico or a piece of cloth used as protection for the horses. Santamaría defines it as an ordinary piece of cotton cloth used primarily for everyday clothing. No Spanish source gives a definition identical to the southwestern meaning of 'pack cover.' It is possible that the first manta was an improvised one and the name simply stuck.
        Alternate form: manto.

  • 113 arciones

(Sp. model spelled same [arsjónes] < Arabic as-siyür, plural of sair, leather strap)
Watts's definition of "stirrup-leathers" agrees with that of Santamaría, who notes the presence of an intrusive /r/ and assignment of the masculine to a term originally accorded feminine gender. He also indicates that it may refer to the saddlehorn (sometimes called the apple or manzana). The DRAE observes that this form arose through a blend of ación and arzón, the latter derived from the Latin arcionis 'forepart or bow of the saddletree.'

  • 117 Arapaho

       1) Glossed by Hendrickson as "a name of uncertain origin for an Indian of a Western plains tribe of the Algonquian family. The name may derive from a Pawnee word for trader or from a Spanish word meaning 'the ragged ones.'" Hendrickson's definition is not supported by Spanish sources and it is unlikely that harapo [arápo], meaning rag or scrap of clothing, is the source of this southwestern term. Watts derives it from aparejo (see above); however, his claim is also unsubstantiated in the Spanish sources consulted.
       2) See aparejo.
