The DRAE references it as a large stone or earthenware mortar with three short, strong feet, used for preparing salsas. Santamaría indicates that it is a small, three-legged mortar used by the lower classes to grind spices and chiles and to prepare salsas; it is even used occasionally as a serving dish for salsas. The instrument used with the molcajete for grinding is called a tejolote. Compare metate, mortero, mano. -
