Développé par les sociétés Fraunhofer IIS et Agere pour procurer un son stéréo enveloppant (appelé 5.1, à savoir cinq enceintes et un caisson de basses), le format MP3 Surround prend moitié plus de place que le format MP3 standard, avec lequel il est compatible. Pour une seconde d’enregistrement stéréo normal, un fichier MP3 standard "occupe" 128 Kbps (kilobits par seconde), soit 2,8 Mo (mégaoctets) pour un morceau de trois minutes. Pour un morceau de même durée, un fichier MP3 Surround "occupe" 192 Kbps, soit 4,32 Mo. Les brevets sont issus par la société Thomson. Des produits utilisant le format MP3 Surround sont lancés fin 2004. -
