El prestigio se mantuvo hasta el fin de su vida, aunque fueron apareciendo dudas aqui y alla. Sin duda uno de sus filmes sonoros mas apreciados, discutidos e influyentes es el western Duelo al sol, magnifico y desmesurado fresco historico, que pone enfasis en lo individual a traves de una supuesta leyenda india. Siguiendo su inveterada costumbre, el productor David O. Selznick intervino mas de lo debido en la realizacion, contratando y descontratando directores, interviniendo personalmente, de forma que una de las tareas de investigacion mas arduas que puede acometer el investigador del western es delimitar la “autoria”, si se me permite la expresion, de la pelicula.
