The general trade term in India for a variety of fabrics made with cotton warp and silk weft. They are made in the Punjab, Sindh, and other parts of India for orthodox Mohammedans in plains, stripes, checks or figured effects. The name is derived from the Persian " musuffa," meaning pure, in this instance " lawful," referring to the law which forbids Mohammedans to wear silk unless mixed with cotton, which fibre, in this instance, forms the back of the cloth and separates the silk from the skin of the wearer. -
