Beside it στρίφος, acc. to Suid. = λίσπος (of ἀστράγαλος); τὰ στρίφη meaning unknown ( Sammelb. 6264, private letter, Rom. time). Similar formations, perh. cognate, are found in Germ., e.g. MLG NLG strif, stref `stiff, severe, solid', MHG LHG streben; s.
