1925Natural de Nueva York, su vocacion primera fue el sacerdocio. Sin llegar a ordenarse, realiza en la Fordham University estudios de comunicacion radiofonica. Despues de la guerra entra en el departamento editorial de “The New York Times”, y de ahi a la cadena de television CBS, donde se convierte en director. Luego, conoce al director Alan J. Pakula, con el que se asociara profesionalmente, creando una productora. Desemboca en el cine con alguna pelicula interesante, hasta que realiza la esplendida Matar un ruisenor (To Kill a Mockingbird, 1962), con la que se consagra como uno de los jovenes directores mas importantes de la lla mada “generacion de la television”.Aunque con altibajos, su filmografia posterior es lo suficientemente estimulante para ser recordado. Basta con citar aqui la nostalgica Summer of 42 (Verano del 42, 1971) y Un verano en Louisiana (Man in the Moon, 1991), una especie de secuela de la anterior, que resultara ser su ultima pelicula. El unico western que dirigio, en consonancia con la personalidad del director y con el momento en que se realizo, predica la tolerancia, y sus resonancias raciales estan impregnadas de humanismo.The Stalking Moon (La noche de los gigantes). 1969. 109 minutos.
