Никсона [ Nixon, Richard Milhous] по американскому телевидению 23 сентября 1952 в ответ на публикации в прессе, в которых он обвинялся в том, что использовал в личных целях средства, собранные сторонниками Республиканской партии на предвыборную кампанию, и в том, что якобы располагал секретным "смазочным фондом" [ slush fund]. Никсон признал, что принял лишь одно подношение - щенка американского коккер-спаниеля: "Наша семья действительно получила один подарок, аж из самого Техаса... Это был щенок коккер-спаниеля. Черный с белыми пятнами. И наша шестилетняя дочка Триши назвала его "Чекерсом" (Пятнистым). Дети щенка просто обожают, и я хочу заявить со всей ответственностью: что бы там про меня ни говорили, мы его обратно не отдадим".
