Ath. 14, 618d (Dorian word); also `song of the mill, ἐπιμύλιος ᾠδή' (H., Poll.) and as surname of Demeter in Syracuse (Polem. Hist. 39). - Adj. ἱμάλιος, after H. = πολύς, ἱκανός, νόστιμος etc., also as month-name in Hierapytna ( GDI 5040, 4).Origin: XX [etym. unknown]Etymology: Popular terms of agriculture, that occur rarely in the literature. With ἱμαλιά cf. first ἁρμαλιά `distributed food, portion', ἀχυρμιά `heap of chaff', φυταλιά `plants in the garden' a. o.; ἱμαλίς is recalled by τροφαλίς `fresh cheese', μολυβδίς `clump of lead' (Chantr. Form. 342ff.). The basis will have been a primary μαλ-deriv.
