Это бездомный торговец старьем, которому подарил плащ незнакомец – человек с нервным тиком. Но плащ был без ремня. Тиздолл, Эрика и торговец ищут – и находят – преступника в отеле, где тот, загримированный под чернокожего, играет на ударных в джазовом оркестре. Он, ухмыляясь, сознается в содеянном. Отныне Тиздолл не только невиновен – он вне подозрений. Радостная Эрика просит отца пригласить молодого человека на ужин.► Это блистательное развлекательное зрелище относится к концу английского периода творчества режиссера и весело, с юмором раскрывает одну из главных хичкоковских тем – тему несправедливого обвинения. Как говорит герой: «Я смеюсь, потому что невиновен». Еще одна хичкоковская тема: призыв доверять своему ближнему – только так можно восстановить справедливость (см. 39 ступеней, The 39 Steps; Дама исчезает, The Lady Vanishes и т. д.). Один из самых скудных сюжетов в своей биографии Хичкок насыщает множеством реалистичных и символичных деталей. (Хотя бы на уровне символов этот относительно бесцветный фильм можно увязать с полутора десятками других картин режиссера.) Эти детали могут быть забавны, ироничны, трогательны; и они всегда легки почти до неуловимости. Они появляются в сценарии, в диалогах, в актерской игре, в расположении актеров в пространстве плана, в том или ином неожиданном и безупречном движении камеры. Это свободное кино, однако оно само себя подчиняет железной дисциплине: оно должно манить, захватывать зрителя – в том числе ошеломляющим ритму, где каждая секунда изобретательна и не отпускает внимание. Результат, которого тем более сложно было добиться, учитывая, что ни одна сцена, говоря строго, не обязательна для сюжета, кроме 1-й и последней, самых красивых. Завязка (семейная сцена, обнаружение трупа) – результат весьма умелого сочетания сложного, элегантного монтажа, тревожной красоты мест и насилия, показанного крайне лаконично в лучших традициях мэтра. (До Психопата, Psycho еще 20 лет, но мы уже не так далеки от сцены в душе.) В последнем эпизоде присутствует знаменитый пролет камеры на кране по залу, где танцуют посетители отеля – этот пролет завершается на загримированном лице ударника, изуродованном тиком. Эта сцена великолепна от начала и до конца. После паузы музыкант занимает свое место (теперь зритель, понимает, кто преступник). Он узнал бездомного торговца и знает, что в здании полиция. Его тик усиливается, как усиливается его нервозность и тревога. Он предстает перед нами мучеником, напоминая злодея из Убийства, Murder! перед самоубийством на трапеции. Он бьет в тарелки не в такт. Затем теряет сознание. Сердобольная героиня подбегает к упавшему, намереваясь – гениальная идея – помочь ему, и замечает, что у него тик. В этой сцене преступник не только хочет обрести внутреннюю свободу через признание, но и молит о наказании.
