shiddé

(זַרְתָּא) זַרְדְּתָא f. ( זרד) bushes of sorb, or service-tree, growing in unhealthy marshes (v. Löw. Pfl. p. 289) Pes.111b דבי ז׳ שידי (v. Rabb. D. S. a. l. note 400) the spirits of the sorb-bushes are named shiddé (demons). Ib. ז׳ סמיכא למתאוכ׳ a sorb-bush near a town has no less than sixty shiddé; (Ms. M. זַרְזְתָא, זִירְזְתָא, זַרְתָּא; v. Rabb. D. S. a. l. notes).Kidd.73b ז׳ … יש בווכ׳ a child exposed in a sorb-bush near a town (where it is likely to die) is considered a foundling (אֲסוּפִי).
