103 Afghanistan Carpets
Pile or knotted carpets made at Herat, of small size. Designs are old ones and of Tartar suggestions. Made of wool or goat's hair. There is a strong odour with these carpets, due to the imperfect washing of the raw material. 104 Baluchistan Rugs
Oriental rugs made in North-west India, of wool, goat's and camel's hair. The long thick pile, is tied in Senna knot. The designs are of geometrical styles in reds, blues and browns, with a little white. -

Woollen carpets made at Kermanshah having the pattern the same on both sides. The knots are tied in the Senna knot way. -
106 Kashan Rugs
Persian rugs of very fine grain and closeness of texture and a notably short and velvety pile. The patterns are flowers in rows or on graceful curling stems with foliage. Usually there is a diamond-shaped medallion centrepiece. The borders are elaborate and frequently have as many as seven stripes. Cotton warp and dyed blue weft. There are two picks between each row of the wool tufts which are tied in " Senna knots." The colouring is dark and sombre, but rich. -
107 Kashgar Rugs
Coarse cotton base rugs with long loose wool pile in Senna knots and made in Central Asia. The design consists of Chinese fret, dragons, fish, etc., in bright pinks, orange, yellows, etc.. Silk pile is often introduced for decoration. -
108 Khiva Rugs
Fine, all-wool rugs of small size, made in Turkestan, the short close pile being tied in Senna knot. Designs are octagonal figures or the prayer-rug pattern, in rich reds, blue, ivory, etc., and a little green. They are made by the Nomad women about Khiva. The head worker traces the design in the sand and hands the different colours to her assistants as desired to produce the pattern. -
109 Khorassan Rugs
Medium and large size Persian rugs made of the Khorassan wool. The close and long fine wool pile is used in Senna knot. The pile is clipped to give an uneven surface. Magenta and blue colours predominate. Designs are usually composed of fish or palm effects. The palm leaf design is usually a small leaf in a larger one. Borders are trailing palm leaves. The rugs are of good quality. There are two picks between each row of tufts, and at intervals three or five picks. -
110 Kirman Carpets And Rugs
Small size, all-wool pile native-made carpets, practically extinct, due to the demand for cheaper articles. The pile is tied in Senna knot and this was one of the finest styles made in India. A pattern of red roses very gracefully worked with a centre medallion was the favourite motif. Borders also had the red roses. The warp was cotton. There are two kinds of knots used to form the pile in Oriental rugs, the Turkish or Ghiordes and the Persian or Senna-The quality of the rug is judged by the number of knots to a square inch. -

114 Persian Knot
One of the two knots in which the pile is tied in hand-made Oriental rugs and carpets. A loop is formed around the warp thread and is tightened by being pulled, thus the pile is placed between all warp threads. Also called senna knot. -
115 Samarkand Rugs
Medium-size rugs made in Central Asia of wool, silk or cotton ground, and loose cotton or silk pile tied in Senna knot. The designs are of Chinese type with five or less medallions, fretwork effects and odd stiff flowers. Colours are yellows, blues, reds, browns, and white. -
116 Sarabend Rugs
Persian hand-made rugs with cotton warp and weft ground and short wool pile tied in Senna knot. The design is always the " Pear " in all-over effects, with elaborate borders of seven or more stripes. The weft crosses twice beneath each row of tufts. They are frequently made as runners, viz., in long narrow stripes. Colours are reds and blues. -

Heavy, all-wool Persian rugs with the wool knots tied in the Senna knot. The pile is long and close. Designs are of floral surround to a medallion centre in rich reds and blues. -

119 Shiraz Rugs
Persian hand-made rugs, all wool and in all sizes. The designs are varied, but the " pear " (see Rugs) is the commonest with the " comb " and " octagon " frequently used. Borders have five or more stripes, the warp is all wool, the weft is pink dyed wool and crosses twice between each row of tufts which are tied in Ghiordes or Senna knots. The ends are fringed and coloured, and sides are " double-overcasted " in different coloured yarns. -
120 Tekke Turkonean Rugs
Medium size, all-wool, fringed rugs made in Turkestan with very short and close pile tied in Senna knot. They are nearly square. The design is always of square and octagonal shapes in crimson, madder, old rose and other reds as chief colours, with a little cream, black, blue and green.
