1 Hauptschule
f etwa secondary school, a school that takes students through the last five years of their compulsory period of education* * *A Hauptschule caters for the last five years of the compulsory nine years at school in Germany. Students can then stay on for another year and, if their marks are good enough, obtain a qualifizierter Hauptschulabschluss, known colloquially as a Quali, which gives them a better chance in the job market and also entitles them to attend a Fachoberschule. In Austria a Hauptschule covers school years five to eight and also offers opportunities for young people who wish to go on to higher education. In Switzerland compulsory schooling is provided by a Volksschule. It normally covers a period of four or six school years and is designed to provide a general education that goes beyond that of a Hauptschule. After completing Realschule students may try for a Fachabitur at a Fachoberschule or serve an apprenticeship. If students from a Realschule achieve good examination results, they may move up to the eleventh year of a Gymnasium and attempt the Abitur. In Austria the functions of Realschulen are performed by mathematische Realgymnasien and extended Hauptschulen. 6 Hauptschule
Haupt·schu·le f≈ secondary modern school ( Brit), ≈ junior high school (Am) (covering years 5 to 9 or the last 5 years of the compulsory nine years at school in Germany or years 5 to 8 in Austria)¿Kultur? The Hauptschule - roughly equivalent to the old secondary modern school in the UK runs from Years 5 to 9. It caters for pupils whose average mark at the end of primary school does not satisfy the requirements of the Realschule or the Gymnasium - grammar school. School leavers with only a Hauptschule certificate often find it difficult to obtain the further training required for most kinds of employment. In Austria, it is possible, given the necessary academic achievement, to switch to a grammar school after completing four years in a Hauptschule. -

n; -s, Gymnasien1. etwa grammar (Am. high) school; humanistisches / musisches Gymnasium etwa grammar (Am. high) school specializing in classics / the fine arts; mathematisch-naturwissenschaftliches Gymnasium mit neusprachlichem Zweig etwa grammar (Am. high) school specializing in mathematics and sciences with a modern languages department2. HIST. gymnasium* * *das Gymnasiumhigh school; grammar school* * *A Gymnasium is a secondary school which students attend for nine or, in some federal states, eight years and which leads to the Abitur. The final two years at a Gymnasium (two and a half in some Länder) are known as the Kollegstufe. The curriculum varies according to the type of school: in a humanistisches Gymnasium Latin and Greek are taught in a neusprachliches Gymnasium English, Latin and French or other lingua franca are taught and in a mathematisch-naturwissenschaftliches Gymnasium the emphasis is on the sciences. A Gymnasium may offer several of these curricula, which pupils choose from when they reach a certain class, usually the seventh or ninth. Since nowadays many students who have taken their Abitur do not necessarily continue studying but undertake a period of training instead, new types of Gymnasien (for example Wirtschaftsgymnasien) have been created with an emphasis on practical work.
