  • 81 alforja(s)

(Sp. model spelled same [alfórxa] < Arabic al-jurya 'the saddlebags')
Bentley: 1847. A pair of bags or boxes made of rawhide, canvas, or wood suspended from a packsaddle; saddlebags. Spanish sources also register this meaning, among others. Another Arabic term introduced into Spanish in the Iberian Peninsula and brought to the New World by Spanish horsemen. Mexican vaqueros subsequently introduced alforja(s) to the ranchers, riders, and ropers in the Southwest. The range of spellings and pronunciations attests to the widespread usage of the term.
Alternate forms: alfarga, alfarge, alfarky, alforche, alforga, alforge, alforka, alforki, alforje, alforkus.

  • 82 blanco

(Sp. model spelled same [bláŋko] < Germanic blanc(k) 'white or brilliant')
Glossed by Hendrickson as a term used by Indians to refer to white men. The DRAE confirms the use of blanco to refer to European or Caucasian people. Many buckaroos were blancos, but there was a significant number of blacks, mestizos, and Indians who rode the range.

  • 83 brasero

(Sp. model spelled same [brasero] < brasa 'red hot coal' of Latin or pre-Roman origin, and - ero, a Spanish nominal suffix; hence, a place to put hot coal or firewood)
       Southern Texas: 1892.
A type of brick oven used by Pueblo Indians and Mexicans, according to Watts. Also a container for holding hot charcoal, used for cooking or for heating. Carlisle comments that the term sometimes refers to a pile of hot coals. These definitions vary somewhat from those found in Spanish sources. The DRAE indicates that a brasero is a deep, circular metal dish with a rim in which one builds a fire for heating. It generally rests on a stand made of wood or metal. Santamaría notes that in Mexico it is a cooking range or stove. He also mentions a portable brasero and a smaller dish, or braserito, which was made of porcelain, clay, or silver and was an essential household item for smokers before the invention of the match.

  • 84 bueno

(Sp. model spelled same [bwéno] < Latin bonum 'good')
Blevins observes that it was used as a cattle term in the Southwest during the open-range days. It referred to a cow that had not been claimed at a roundup and whose brand could not be found in the brand book. Such a cow was a good find because it could be slipped past brand inspectors. This meaning is not referenced in Spanish sources.

  • 85 cordillera

(Sp. model spelled same [korðijéra] < Spanish cuerda 'visible summit of a mountain' < Latin chorda 'string of a musical instrument' or 'rope, cord' plus the diminutive - illo and derivative suffix - era 'place where the summits abound')
Clark: 1880s. A mountain range; especially the Rocky Mountains of the western United States and Canada. Clark notes that there is an adjective form, cordilleran, and Hendrickson indicates that the term is frequently seen in the plural, cordilleras. The DRAE glosses it as a series of mountains that are connected to one another. See also sierra.

  • 86 sierra

(Sp. model spelled same [sjéra] < Latin serram 'saw')
New Mexico and Texas: 1850. A mountain range; used frequently in the names of mountain ranges in the West, as in Sierra Madre, Sierra Nevada, High Sierra, etc. The DRAE concurs.

    Vocabulario Vaquero > sierra
