más viejo1. Voz procedente del comparativo latino senior ('más viejo'), cuyo uso actual en español se ha revitalizado por influjo del inglés. En español debe escribirse con tilde por ser palabra llana terminada en consonante distinta de -n o -s. Se opone a júnior y hoy se usa con los sentidos siguientes:a) Se pospone al nombre propio de una persona, para distinguirla de un pariente de menor edad que tiene el mismo nombre, normalmente el hijo: "Felipe González sénior volvió a casarse dos años después de fallecer Juana Márquez" (Gutiérrez/Miguel Ambición [Esp. 1989]). Para distinguir al padre del hijo se usa tradicionalmente en español la voz padre, opción más recomendable: " Alejandro Dumas padre lo convirtió en protagonista de dos de sus novelas" (Vidal Ocultismo [Esp. 1995]).b) En el ámbito deportivo, '[deportista] de la categoría superior, por edad o por méritos': "Llegó a ser campeón de Galicia infantil, sénior y absoluto" ( Mundo [Esp.] 30.9.96). Como sustantivo, es común en cuanto al género: "La sénior Cristina Valle se adjudicó el Campeonato Internacional de Estoril" ( Canarias 7 [Esp.] 30.4.99). Como adjetivo significa también 'de los séniores': " Fuimos el mejor club gallego en categoría sénior" ( VGalicia [Esp.] 13.12.00).c) Referido a un profesional, 'de mayor edad y, por tanto, de más experiencia que otro': "El tercer punto de pesquisa queda bajo la responsabilidad del investigador sénior y de su auxiliar" (Aguirre Antropología [Méx. 1986]). A veces designa al profesional de mayor rango, independientemente de su edad.2. Aunque para el plural suele usarse mayoritariamente la forma anglicada * séniors, se recomienda acomodar esta palabra a la morfología española y usar el pluralséniores.
