Num. R. l. c. (expl. מפזז, v. supra) הזהב המס׳ … פוזז the refined gold which he wore made a rustling noise. Nithpa. נִסְתַּנֵּן, Hithpol. הִסְתּוֹנֵן to be refined. Ib. s. 7, beg. נִסְתַּנְּנוּ הפסולות ממנווכ׳ when the base metals are removed from it (the silver) by refining, it shows at once Pesik. R. s. 14 (ref. to Ps. 12:7) (read:) כשם שהכסף … ומצטרף ומִסְתּוֹנֵןוכ׳ as the silver to be smelted enters the crucible and is smelted and refined etc.; כך היא התורה מִסְתּוֹנֶנֶתוכ׳ so is the Law refined and smelted (through study) in forty-nine ways.
