Ruling of the Court of Arbitration for Sport which states that any footballer aged between 23 and 28 is entitled to walk out on a club, so long as he has served at least three years of his contract, or any player aged 28 or more after having served at least two years of its duration, with the only compensation due being the value of his wages due under the remainder of the contract.► This ruling was named after Andy Webster, the Scotland defender who unilaterally broke his contract with Heart of Midlothian to move to Wigan in summer 2006.

A 1995 European Court of Justice decision, primarily effective in the European countries concerned, which led to the abolition of transfer payments for players whose contract has expired, and to the abolition of limitations on foreign players in club teams.► The Bosman ruling was the result of a lawsuit filed by the professional player Jean-Marc Bosman against his former club, who stopped his move to a new club by demanding a high transfer fee.
