1889-1968Nacido en Chicago, es actor entre 1908 y 1917, y director entre 1913 y 1957. En sus primeros anos como director, hasta 1917, dirige sobre todo cortometrajes. Hombre todo-terreno, con mas de 150 peliculas en su haber, cultivo todos los generos, particularmente el melodrama romantico, la comedia y el musical. Asociamos su nombre a Metro-Goldwyn- Mayer, con quien consiguio dos candidaturas, ambas frustradas, al Oscar al Mejor Director, por La divorciada (The Divorcee, 1930) y El gran Ziegfeld (The Great Ziegfeld, 1936), pelicula esta que si consiguio el Oscar correspondiente al Mejor Filme. Un unico western, perteneciente al subgenero western musical, adorna su filmografia.The Girl of the Golden West (Ciudad del oro). 1938. 121 minutos. Blanco y Negro. MGM.
