(Windows media audio)Développé par la société Microsoft, WMA (Windows media audio) est un format propriétaire de compression audio (son, musique, voix) à un taux d’encodage de 64 Kbps (kilobits par seconde), deux fois moindre que le MP3 (encodage à 128 Kbps). La taille des fichiers (dont l’extension est ".wma") est donc nettement inférieure aux fichiers MP3, ce qui signifie des possibilités de stockage supérieures. Le logiciel de compression et de diffusion correspondant est le WME (Windows media encoder), qui dispose d’un système DRM (digital rights management), à savoir un système de gestion des droits d’auteur permettant de déterminer l’utilisation du fichier musical en fonction des directives données par l’ayant droit. Deux autres formats de compression audio sont le MP3, développé par le MPEG (Moving Picture Experts Group), et et AAC (advanced digital encoding) d’Apple, lui aussi développé par le MPEG.
