Повышение или снижение цены на товар происходит в результате изменения величины спроса или предложения. На графике это выглядит как смещение кривых спроса/предложения: Если кривая спроса смещается до положения D1 при неизменной величине предложения, равновесная цена повышается с OP до OP1. Если смещается кривая предложения до положения S1 при неизменной величине спроса, тогда равновесная цена снижается до OP2. См. Ломаная кривая спроса
Кривая, при помощи которой можно объяснить причину стремления фирм в условиях олигополии поддеживать стабильность цен. Рассмотрим график. Линия DD представляет собой кривую спроса рынка, на котором все фирмы устанавливают одинаковые цены. Если одна фирма решит повысить цену относительно точки К (установившейся на рынке цены), она потеряет часть сделок в пользу конкурентов, поскольку они не станут в ответ делать то же самое. Ее кривая спроса будет представлена отрезком DHK. Спрос на продукцию этой фирмы при цене выше точки К эластичен (пологая часть ломаной кривой). С другой стороны, если она попытается снизить цену, чтобы отнять сделки у конкурентов, они помешают ей это сделать, также снизив цены, чтобы сохранить свои позиции на рынке. Поэтому при ценах ниже точки К спрос будет менее эластичным (крутая часть ломанной кривой KD). Интересно также отметить, что кривая предельного дохода также имеет изгиб, соответствующий изгибу кривой спроса.
