Нужно понимать, что 9 пунктов из 10-ти и означает уверенность, что в споре о владении чем-либо владелец того, о чём идёт спор, находится в самой выгодной ситуации, т. е. в спорных случаях правосудие стоит на стороне фактического владельца имущества. Возможные варианты: possession in nine-tenths of the law (« девять десятых») и более ранняя версия — possession is eleven points of the law («11 пунктов из возможных 12»).
