Cobos indicates that 'Stockaded Plain' or 'Palisaded Plain' would be a more appropriate translation of the Spanish llano estacado than 'Staked Plain,' which is how the name of the region is generally translated into English. He notes that Spanish explorers named the plain after a rimrock formation that resembled a stone fortress. The assumption by English speakers that the plain was named for a trail marked by stakes driven into the earth is a misconception or simply the product of a poor translation. -

According to the DARE, this term has a specific meaning in Nebraska; it refers to "a steep gully along a river." The DRAE defines mesa as an extended piece of elevated flat land surrounded by valleys or cliffs. This geographical term, along with a few others such as arroyo and ( box) canyon, is linked in the popular mind with gunslingers, rustlers, sheriffs, ranchers and cowboys, thanks to Hollywood and pulp fiction. In fact, many outlaws hid out in the badlands. -

An intoxicating drink made from fermented agave sap. The DRAE describes it as a thick white drink from the Mexican highlands obtained by fermenting the juice extracted from the maguey plant with an acocote (a long calabash with perforations at both ends). Santamaría references it as a thick white, spiritous, and intoxicating drink with an unpleasant taste and nauseating properties. The drink is popular among the poorer classes on the Central Plateau and, along with chiles and tortillas, forms a principal source of nutrition. -

Santamaría glosses it as a reed or bulrush whose leaves are used to weave mats and even curtains and other items. In Mexico the term frequently refers to a species of Cyperus, native to the lakes of the Central Plateau. It may also refer to Seirpus californicus, S. lacustris, Typha angustifolia, and T. latifolia. In the plural, "the tules" refers to an out-of-the-way or desolate place, or "the middle of nowhere." Hence the expressions "to be in deep tules," meaning to be in trouble with the law and "to pull freight for the tules," "to be on the lam." The term is also used in forming numerous compounds. Some examples include: tule elk, tule gnat, tule wren; tule lake, tule land, tule marsh or swamp.Alternate forms: toolie, tula, tulé, tuley.
