Used in hospitals, etc. The cloth is made 42-in. or 46-in. wide, and after bleaching is slit into various widths suitable for use as bandages.

    Low quality plain weave cloth used for covering plants, for packing meat, bookbinding, etc. Bleached and soft finished. Widths from 24-in. to 46-in. A standard cloth has 28 ends and 24 picks per inch, 30's warp, 44's weft, and weighs 61/4-lb. for 36-in. 100 yards.

  • 45 Umbrella Cloth

    Fine cloth for covering umbrellas made from good quality long staple cotton. Usually 36-in. to 44-in. wide, 75 yards to 90 yards long, 96 to 110 ends and picks per inch, 30's to 60's warp and weft, plain weave. Some cloths have a coloured cotton or worsted selvedge, and some have an elaborate striped border. The selvedge of the cloth is of great importance so it is usually woven from separate bobbins (see Gloria)

    A coarse, plain weave and hand-woven cloth made from coarse yams, used by the poorer classes in the Bankura district in Bengal. Varying from 20 X 20 to 20 X 28, 14's warp and weft.

  • 47 Apron Cloth

    Plain woven coloured cloths in stripes and checks. Colours are usually blues and blacks, with a side border differently coloured of bolder stripe or of figuring worked on the dhootie principle; 34 to 38-in. wide, 64 ends and picks to 72 ends and picks, 28's to 36's warp and weft. A standard cloth both for the home and colonial markets is 64 X 64, 28/30's, and in square designs. Fancy designs are very commonly used as apron cloths.

  • 48 Arras Cloth

    A loosely woven fabric made from jute, in wide widths, dyed, used for curtains, table and cushion covers. A better cloth is made from coarse linen yarns as below: - 46 X 42, 50 / 42's linen, plain weave. The term was first applied to woven stuffs made at Arras, France, in the 14th century, which were decorated with simple patterns for use as hangings in rooms. It was originally called Opus Saracenicum.

    A plain weave cloth, woven from rough yarns and dyed and finished" to imitate linen. Much used for summer dresses and children's suits. The yams are hard spun. A fair quality is woven 38-in., 90 yards, 48 X 44 per inch, 16's/14's. In the better qualities a mohair weft is used.

    A reversible woollen cloth with a weft cord stripe and warp repp ground. The weave is a weft float over four warp ends, and each alternate stripe bound plain on the face, the other being bound on the back.

    A plain weave cotton cloth, woven in Asia Minor of white and coloured yams in stripes.

  • 53 Brassiere Cloth

    A fabric used for the corset trade, woven on dobby or jacquard looms, from super quality yarns and usually with stripes in the warp, from rayon or 2/40's mercerised cotton yarn. When rayon is used, the designs are such that no long floats are shown. A standard quality is 36-in. grey, 84 X 76 per inch, 22's weft, 28's cotton, 150 denier rayon (or 2/40's mercerised for 150 denier), piece-dyed in pink and other light colours. Another cloth shipped to U.S.A. is made 37-in., 92 X 68, 20's/20's super American yarns with rayon stripes and plain stripes alternating, 1/2-in. to 1-in. in width.

  • 54 Cheese Cloth

    A low plain weave fabric, such as 24 X 20 to 52 X 48 per inch, 40's/36's, 9 to 12 yards to the pound. Sometimes termed " bunting." Used for wrapping cheese, meat, etc., sugar, salt, and flour bags. Bleached in a pure finish. Widths vary from 24-in. to 50-in. The cloth mostly used for bags is woven 36-in. 120 yard, 44 X 40, 30's/42's, 131/2-lb.

    A plain weave fabric made from yarns spun from ramie (China grass) in many widths and qualities. The lustre on the fabric gives an impression of linen. It is used for small tablecloths, etc. (see Grass Cloth)

    A coarse, plain-weave cloth for use as floorcloth, etc. Made with 32 ends and 32 picks per inch, 2/14's warp, bump weft. Many qualities used to be made here, but the trade is now passing to the Continent.

    GLORIA CLOTH, GLORIA SILK
    A half-silk fabric, silk warp and cotton or woollen weft, plain weave. Originally used for dusters, but now made for umbrella cloths. Requires very careful weaving since faults are plainly shown when finished. A cotton Gloria is woven in 3 & 1 twill from super Egyptian yarns, such as 36's warp, 34's weft, 80 ends and 90 picks per inch. For this cloth the weft is rewound to ensure regular weaving.

  • 60 Gypsy Cloth

    A plain weave cotton cloth usually in cream shades and raised face finish, and used for sportswear, tennis, boating, etc. It is made in various widths, 33-in., 45-in. and 54-in. and about 54 ends and 60 picks per inch, 32's T., 16's W. It is a very good quality flannelette.
