Schwyzer 439 n. 6 wants to explain from *πέδ-ι-Ϝλον prop. "footwrap"; apart from the facts this, is not aboslutely reliable, s. Hamm Grammatik, par. 26. Cf. on ὅμῑλος. - The suffix seems Pre-Greek; long vowel is in that case frequent.
