    adv не (1). Отрицательные предложения и отрицательные ответы могут быть смягчены наречием really:

    It is not really important — Это не так важно.

    Are you hungry? Not really — Вы хотите есть? Не очень.

    (2). Not перед прилагательным с отрицательным значением делает предложение утвердительным:

    Frost and snow are not uncommon at this time of the year — Мороз и снег в это время года обычны.

    It is not unlikely that… — Вполне вероятно, что…

    (3). В сочетаниях с именной группой, в составе которой есть короткое (немногосложное) прилагательное, not стоит перед неопределенным артиклем:

    Not a bad idea!

    Not an easy question to answer.

    В тех случаях, когда прилагательное многосложно (три и более слогов), not употребляется после неопределенного артикля:

    It is a not unreasonable suggestion.

    (4). Not стоит перед последующим инфинитивом:

    I asked him not to be late.

    (5). Not употребляется в коротких репликах с глаголами суждения to believe, to hope, to suppose:

    Is he ill? I hope/believe not.

    (6). Словосочетание not only… but может стоять в начале предложения для усиления. В этом случае используются эмфатический глагол to do и обратный порядок слов:

    Not only did he send letters but he telephoned every night. — Он не только писал письма, но и звонил по телефону каждый вечер.
