       Fritz Lang es uno de los grandes nombres de la cultura cinematografica del siglo XX. Capaz de aunar ideologia, sensibilidad y espectaculo, desde sus primeras peliculas mudas muestra una insolita capaci dad para construir obras maestras, una detras de otra. En Alemania, su patria natal, y en los Estados Unidos, su patria de acogida, dirigio peliculas, algunas de ellas aparentemente banales, hasta construir una de las filmografias mas coherentes y atemporales que cabe imaginar. Filmes declaradamente antinazis, como Man Hunt (1941), Hangmen Also Die (1943), The Ministry of Fear (1944) y Cloak and Dagger (1946), ninguno de ellos, sospechosamente, estrenado comercialmentre en Espana en su momento; valientes y pesimistas peliculas acerca de la condicion humana, como Furia (Fury, 1936), Solo se vive una vez (You Only Live Once, 1937), Clash by Night (1952), o Los sobornados (The Big Heat, 1953); esplendidos espectaculos visuales como las dos partes de Die Spinnen (Der goldene See, 1919, y Das Brillantenschiff, 1920) o, sobre todo, el diptico formado por El tigre de Esnapur y La tumba india (Der Tiger von Eschnapur y Das indische Grabmal, respectivamente, 1959); la creacion magistral del diabolico Doctor Mabuse, que atraviesa, a lo largo, toda su carrera, en tres peliculas que son, si se quiere, algunas mas, ya que la primera (1922) la forman dos extensas partes, la segunda, ya sonora (1932), tiene dos versiones, una alemana y otra inglesa; la tercera, por fin, es la pelicula con la que el director cierra su filmografia, en 1960; obras excepcionales, singulares, dignas de profunda reflexion, como Las tres luces (Der mude Tod, 1921). Tambien, desde luego, tres westerns de encargo, capaces de superar sus limitaciones iniciales hasta constituirse en obras seneras del genero, en especial la ultima, magistral discurso acerca del bien, del mal y de sus efectos sobre el ser humano.

       Prestigioso montador (Hangmen Also Die, Fritz Lang, 1943; Mientras la ciudad duerme, While the City Sleeps, Fritz Lang, 1956; Forty Guns, Samuel Fuller, 1957; Run of the Arrow, Samuel Fuller, 1957, entre otras), se atreve en siete ocasiones a situarse detras de la camara con resultados nada espectaculares, aunque hay que decir que su segunda pelicula, I Was a Teenage Werewolf, se ha convertido con el tiempo en una pelicula de culto. Dirigio, tambien, algunos episodios de series de television. En su haber, un par de westerns.

    1902-1981
       Sus primeros anos los ocupa en labores de actor de vodevil. Aprende el oficio de realizador de James Cruze, que le da la alternativa en 1934, con Amor en ruta, modesta pelicula de serie basada en una obra de Zane Grey. Su labor como director, con casi noventa peliculas en su haber, entre cine y television, fue anodina, destacando eso si por su eficacia como gestor, lo que hizo que le fueran encomendados muchos proyectos en los que no se deseaba gastar demasiado dinero. Lo mejor de si mismo lo dio en la comedia, genero al que se dedico preferentemente a partir de los anos 40. Trabajo con alguna asiduidad para la pareja Bud Abbott-Lou Costello, manteniendo una importante relacion personal con el segundo de ellos. Su ultimo western estrenado, Zorro, the Avenger (1960), es una sintesis de 6 episodios de la serie televisiva que, con el mismo titulo, produjo Walt Disney. Excepcionalmente se incluye aqui, debido a la labor de sintesis realizada, que la aproxima a una obra de creacion genuina.

       Polaco de nacimiento, Rudolph Mate es el director de fotografia de La pasion de Juana de Arco (La Passion de Jeanne d’Arc, Carl Th. Dreyer, 1928), La bruja vampiro (Vampyr, Carl Th. Dreyer, 1930) o Liliom (Fritz Lang, 1934). Ya en Estados Unidos, continua con su labor fotografica hasta que, en 1947, se pasa a la direccion. La primera pelicula que firma en solitario es la magnifica Con las horas contadas (D.O.A., 1949), un subyugante ejercicio de estilo. Mas tarde alternara peliculas mejores y peores, pero el conjunto de su obra es altamente estimable, en particular algunos de sus westerns, como Marcado a fuego, Hombres violentos y La ley de los fuertes. Esta ultima pelicula es, probable mente, su ultima obra estimable; poco despues, culminaria su carrera haciendo varias peliculas en Europa.
