1 Oilcloth
A fabric made from coarse jute yarns usually one or two yards wide for floors, and narrower for stairs, etc. The weave is plain. This material is then covered with several layers of linseed oil mixed with ochre and other pigments and fillers, and afterwards printed and varnished. The foundation fabric for oilcloth for table covers is made from cotton yarns and is much thinner and more pliable than floor oilcloth. The production of oilcloth was known in 1316, when a French manuscript mentions the purchase of Toile Ciree for the funeral of John I. -
