Поглощение газов металлами (сплавами) или их расплавами с образованием растворов или химических соединений (оксидов, нитридов, гидридов и т.п.). При окклюзии газы поглощаются не поверхностным слоем, а всем объемом поглотителя, подобно абсорбции (растворению) газов в жидкостях. Наиболее характерна окклюзия газов, например, Н2, металлами VIII группы Периодической системы элементов. Твердое тело, поглощающее газ, называется сорбентом (адсорбентом, абсорбентом). Газ или пар, поглощаемый сорбентом, называется сорбатом (адсорбатом, абсорбатом). Сорбционная емкость любого адсорбента зависит от величины поверхности на единицу массы. Количество адсорбированного вещества значительно возрастает у пористых тел.
