Нейлон. Появилось много интересных, но, главным образом, ложных версий о происхождении этого слова. Самая колоритная из них следующая: в 1938 г., когда впервые появилось это чудесное вещество, изобретатели его победоносно воскликнули: Now you lousy old Nipponese! (Вот вам, паршивые старые японцы!), обращаясь к японцам, которые достигли больших успехов в развитии текстильной промышленности. Вторая версия предлагает такой вариант: это слово — простая комбинация слов New York и London. На самом же деле всё обстоит иначе: химическое название этого вещества состоит из 26 букв, поэтому оно было сокращено и стало называться polyamide (полиамид). Слово nylon изобрела фирма Дюпон по аналогии с уже существовавшими словами cotton (хлопок) и rayon (вискоза), при этом были отвергнуты несколько вариантов, т. к. они были слишком похожи на уже существующие слова или являлись фирменными марками. Кстати, одним из отвергнутых слов являлось слово Duparooh. -
