3 -agenda o diary?-
In inglese questa parola significa “ordine del giorno”, “programma”: Are you happy with the agenda?, vi va bene l'ordine del giorno? L'“agenda” italiana in inglese è diary: I'll look in my diary, guarderò nella mia agenda. -
4 -can o to be able to?-
Nota d'usoQuando si parla di abilità al presente l'uso di can o to be able to è indifferente dal punto di vista grammaticale. Tuttavia, normalmente si tende ad usare can: Can you drive?, sai guidare? a meno che non ci siano delle condizioni per cui ci siano dubbi sulle capacità di una persona in un particolare momento. Se la persona a cui ci si rivolge non si sente bene, ad esempio, si preferisce usare to be able to: Are you able to drive?, sei in grado di guidare? Al passato semplice, le due forme possibili sono could e was/were able to. Se si vuole sottolineare un'abilità in generale, non c'è differenza d'uso: I could (o was able to) swim when I was five, sapevo nuotare a cinque anni. Se invece si pone l'enfasi su un risultato da ottenere, si deve utilizzare was/were able to o, in alternativa, il verbo to manage: Were you able to (o Did you manage to) get a newspaper?, sei riuscito a prendere un giornale? (non Could you get a newspaper? che sarebbe inteso come una richiesta: prenderesti un giornale?). Al futuro e nei tempi composti è possibile utilizzare solo la locuzione to be able to: I haven't been able to finish the report, non sono riuscito a finire la relazione; I'll be able to finish by Friday, riuscirò a finire entro giovedì. -
5 -come-
«Bene», «how's Peggy?» «she's fine»; «Come va la scuola?», «how's school?»; Come hai trovato il film?, how was the movie?come si traduce invece con what … like quando si chiedono informazioni su attributi permanenti come l'aspetto fisico o il carattere: «Com'è la sua ragazza? (= che aspetto ha?)» «È alta e ha i capelli scuri», «what does his girlfriend look like?» «she's tall and dark-haired» (non how's his girlfriend?); «Com'è Peggy? (= che tipo è?)» «È una gran chiacchierona», «what's Peggy like?» «she's a great talker» (non How's Peggy?). -
6 -curiosity e curiosita-
La locuzione corretta è just out of curiosity: Just out of curiosity, is there a sauna at the hotel?, una curiosità: c'è la sauna nell'hotel? In alternativa si può usare anche l'espressione by the way: By the way, is there a sauna in the hotel? La locuzione it's a curiosity, invece, significa “è una stranezza”, “è strano”: It's a curiosity, but we don't know them so well at all, è strano, ma non li conosciamo affatto così bene. -
7 -goodbye-
8 -had better-
Nota d'usohad better (spesso usato nella forma contratta 'd better) è seguito dall'infinito senza to: You'd better wait for a couple of days, faresti bene ad aspettare un paio di giorni (non You'd better to wait); You'd better read the contract carefully before you sign it (non You'd better to read), ti conviene leggere il contratto attentamente prima di firmarlo. -
9 -let's / let us-
Nota d'usoLa forma più comune dell'imperativo di prima persona plurale con let è let's; la forma non contratta, let us, è formale: Let's stop here!, fermiamoci qui!; Let us submit to God's will, affidiamoci alla volontà di Dio! La forma let us può anche significare lasciaci o lasciateci, cioè essere un normale imperativo di seconda persona singolare o plurale: Please, let us do our job, per favore, lasciateci fare il nostro lavoro!La question tag dell'imperativo introdotto da let's è shall we?: Let's try, shall we?, dài, proviamo!; «Let's go dancing, shall we?» «Yes, let's», «dài, andiamo a ballare!» «va bene, (andiamo)».Le forme negative dell'imperativo introdotto da let's sono let's not e, nella lingua formale, let us not; specialmente nell'inglese britannico, sono diffuse anche le forme don't let's e, nel registro formale, do not let us: Let's not give in, non cediamo!; non diamoci per vinti!; Do not let us be disheartened by this defeat, non scoraggiamoci per questa sconfitta! -
10 -pagare-
Nota d'uso1 Con il verbo to pay il servizio, il lavoro o il bene pagato è preceduto da for: Devo pagarti i libri, I have to pay you for the books (non I have to pay you the books); Ha pagato lui la cena, he paid for (the) dinner (non he paid the dinner); La traduzione deve ancora essere pagata, the translation still has to be paid for (non the translation still has to be paid).2 Davanti alla somma pagata e a termini che indicano una somma ( conto, debito, tassa, multa, affitto, ecc.), non si usa alcuna preposizione: Ho pagato soltanto 10 sterline, I paid only 10 pounds; Ha pagato l'appartamento 100.000 euro, he paid 100,000 euros for the flat; Dovetti pagare una multa salata, I had to pay a hefty fine; Chi ha pagato il conto?, who paid the bill? They paid me very little for the review. -
11 -stare-
Nota d'uso -
12 -the team is o the team are?-
13 -to lay / to lie-
Nota d'usoFra i parlanti di madrelingua inglese è abbastanza frequente l'uso erroneo delle forme di to lay ( lay, laying, laid, laid) al posto di quelle di to lie (2) ( lie, lying, lay, lain) con il significato di giacere, essere disteso (o coricato, sdraiato): You'd better lay (corretto: You'd better lie) on the bed, faresti bene a stenderti sul letto; He was laying (corretto: was lying) on the pavement, era disteso sul marciapiede. -
