Существительное случай передается различными английскими словами в зависимости от значения. Случай ('происшествие') имеет несколько эквивалентов в английском языке: occurrence, event, incident, case, accident и emergency. Occurrence передает наиболее обобщенное значение – 'то, что случилось' и может взаимозаменяться с event и incident: happy occurrence, happy event, happy incident. Incident в повседневном употреблении имеет в виду событие второстепенного значения, часто случайное, не имеющее большого отношения к главным событиям; однако в газетной практике incident употребляется в значении 'решительное, критическое событие, могущее вызвать прекращение дипломатических отношений или явиться поводом к войне': border (frontier) incident 'случай на границе, пограничный инцидент'. Event обычно обозначает более или менее важное, значительное событие, не являющееся результатом случайности. В отличие от occurrence, употребляющегося только с препозитивным определением, event и incident могут сочетаться также с существительным (имеющим предлог of) в постпозиции: events of the season, ordinary incidents of daily life. Case, которое также употребляется в значении 'случай – происшествие' (strange case), чаще означает 'факт': cases of robbery 'случаи ограбления', cases of murder 'случаи убийства', cases of typhus 'случаи заболевания тифом'. Case в значении 'положение', 'обстоятельства' широко употребляется в ряде устойчивых словосочетаний: in certain cases 'в некоторых случаях', in any case 'в любом случае' (при любых обстоятельствах), in your case 'в вашем случае' (в вашем положении), in this case 'в таком случае', just in case 'на всякий случай'. Accident имеет значение 'несчастный случай': railway accident, street accident. Случай в значении 'удобное или подходящее обстоятельство' передается английскими словами opportunity, occasion и chance, которые могут сочетаться как с препозитивным, так и с постпозитивным определением, выраженным инфинитивом или герундием с предлогом of. Opportunity, occasion и chance часто употребляются с последующим существительным или герундием с предлогом for и могут сочетаться с глаголом have: to have a happy opportunity to see a country (for seeing a country, of seeing a country), to have an occasion for laughter (to laugh), to have a chance to see a film (for seeing a film, of seeing a film). Opportunity может употребляться со словами no, not much, little, not any: to have no (not much, little) opportunity for doing something. Occasion может употребляться с предлогом on: on several occasions 'несколько раз', on the occasion of 'по случаю чего-л.', on this occasion 'по этому случаю'.
