•• * Простое, казалось бы, слово, но даже в хороших переводах автоматическая «подстановка» русского соответствия писатель может привести к появлению «темных мест». Ведь русское слово ассоциируется прежде всего с автором произведений художественной литературы (причем прозы, а не поэзии). Английское writer куда шире и включает авторов всего, что принято называть non-fiction (публицистика, документальная, научно-популярная, техническая литература).

•• Конечно, автор этой интересной статьи Т. Гартон Эш не писатель в нашем понимании этого слова. Writers are not diplomats (предположительный английский текст; оригинала у меня нет) лучше для ясности перевести Но я не дипломат, а публицист.
•• Участники дискуссии на эту тему на сайте www.lingvoda.ru обратили мое внимание на два факта. Во-первых, в Союз писателей СССР принимали не только писателей (и, конечно, поэтов), но и литературных критиков, публицистов, переводчиков, одним словом, всех пишущих людей. Во-вторых, уже почти прижилось словосочетание технический писатель (калька с английского technical writer).
•• И то и другое замечание верно, но они не отменяют того факта, что слово писатель в русском языке имеет другой ассоциативный ряд и его основное значение – автор романов, повестей, рассказов (поэтому и говорят писатели и поэты). Что касается термина технический писатель, то, если он устоится и закрепится не только в специальных кругах, это, конечно, облегчит жизнь переводчика, но пока его нельзя считать окончательно прижившимся.
