nochtli

  • 1 nopal

(Sp. model spelled same [nopál] < Nahuatl nopalli < nochtli 'prickly pear' and palli 'flattened object')
Colorado: 1823. A prickly pear cactus; also the flat section or leaf ( penca) of such a cactus. Santamaría glosses it as the common name of several cacti that produce a prickly pear, especially Opuntia cactus and O. hernandezii, a plant that grows to about ten feet in height and has flattened stalks composed of a series of fleshy, oval-shaped sections covered with spines. The cactus also produces yellow flowers with many petals and spiny, edible fruits that are green when unripe and turn yellow or cherry-colored when they mature.
