1 Hill, George Roy
1921-2002Nacido en Minneapolis, Minnesota, George Roy Hill curso estudios musicales en la Universidad de Yale, en la que se graduo en 1943. Fue piloto en la Se gunda Guerra Mundial y en la Guerra de Corea. En el mundo del audiovisual entra por la puerta de la television, me dio para el que dirige diversos episodios de series desde 1956. En 1962 debuta en el cine, pero obtiene su primer verdadero triunfo en 1969 con el que sera su unico western, Dos hombres y un destino, uno de los hitos de la decada. En los oidos de todos los espectadores resuenan todavia los ecos del exito de la tramposa The Sting (El golpe, 1973), el mas clamoroso que jamas alcanzo George Roy Hill, aunque el de Dos hombres y un destino casi se le puede comparar. Sin duda, en ambos casos influyo la singular quimica desprendida por la pareja protagonista, formada por Paul New man y Robert Red ford. Realizador brillante, de esos que aparentan mas de lo que son, no cabe duda de que su vision romantica del salvaje oeste supuso una revitalizacion del mismo, aunque a esta se le pueda achacar cierta superficialidad.Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid (Dos hombres y un destino). 1969. 110 minutos. 1896-1991Entra en el mundo del cine a comienzos de los anos 20, abriendo de par en par la puerta de la actuacion, labor en la que le acreditaba su experiencia previa sobre los escenarios. En 1924 se estrena como realizador, tarea en la que persiste hasta 1967. Entre 1933 y 1935 es el director casi unico de la modesta productora Powerty Row. En 1935 pasa a Metro- Goldwyn-Mayer, donde permanecera hasta 1962. Dirige, en los mas de cuarenta anos de profesion, cerca de 200 peliculas, de las que unas 120 son sonoras. Aborda todos los generos, si bien se encuentra mas comodo dentro de la accion y la aventura, donde obtiene sus mayores reconocimientos, como en Ivanhoe (1953) y en Los caballeros del rey Arturo (Knights of the Round Table, 1954), por ejemplo, ademas de tres entregas del Tarzan protagonizado por Johnny Weissmuller. Entre otras muchas cosas, es uno de los pioneros en el uso de formatos anchos. 1912-2002Andre De Toth hizo siempre poco ruido pero, paso a paso, fue construyendo una obra tan modesta como estimable. Hungaro de nacimiento, despues de licenciarse en leyes entra en el mundo del teatro, en su pais, y de alli al cine, donde trabaja como guionista, ayudante de direccion, montador y, esporadicamente, actor, hasta dirigir cinco peliculas, inmediatamente antes del estallido de la Segunda Guerra Mundial. De Hungria salta a Inglaterra, contratado por el emigrado hungaro Alexander Korda. Es en Inglaterra donde cambia su nombre verdadero, Toth Endre, por el de Andre De Toth. En los Estados Unidos, adonde se traslada poco despues, rodo mas de treinta filmes a partir de 1943, de los que nada menos que once son westerns. Tratandose de un hombre que viene de Centroeuropa, no se le puede pedir mayor sensibilidad a la hora de abordar la tematica clasica de este genero, que contribuyo a ennoblecer.
